Woodland advance to Class 5A Sweet 16 baseball tournament

The Cartersville Purple Hurricanes and the Woodland Wildcats advanced to the Class 5A Sweet 16 baseball tournament with sweeps Tuesday afternoon.

Cartersville won against Chattahoochee and Woodland beat Cambridge.

Adairsville and Cass weren’t so lucky as their seasons ended. The Tigers fell to Pike in the Class 3A tournament, while the Colonels lost to Kell in the Class 5A tournament.

Cartersville vs. Chattahoochee: The Purple Hurricanes used a pair of victories, winning 11-7 and 5-2 to advance past the Cougars Tuesday afternoon.

Cartersville will face Jefferson at home in the Class 5A second round.

In the first game against the Cougars, Cartersville outhit Chattahoochee 11-10 en route to the victory.

Both teams scored six runs in the first inning, but the Purple Hurricanes settled down and took control of the contest from there, scoring two runs in the second and three in the sixth.

Caleb Daniel and Cole Crawford each homered for the Purple Hurricanes. Daniel finished with three RBIs and Crawford two.

Pitcher Sawyer Wilson picked up the win and finished with eight strikeouts in 5 ⅔ innings. Andrew Purdy struck out four while pitching 1 ⅓ innings.

In the second game, Cartersville spread the offensive wealth with Cameron Cochran, Tristan McKibben and Crawford each finishing the game with two hits.

Aidan Larkin, Purdy, Cochran, McKibben and Crawford each drove in RBIs.

Nate Russell pitched five innings to pick up the win while finishing with five strikeouts. Logan Shrewsbury pitched two innings, striking out three.

Cartersville faces a Jefferson team that beat Midtown 11-1 and 11-0 in its first-round game.

Woodland vs. Cambridge: Woodland used two close victories, beating the Bears 2-1 and 6-5, to advance to the Sweet 16.

The Wildcats move on to play a road series against Loganville in the second round.

Both games turned into pitchers duels but Woodland found just enough offense in both games to extend its season.

In the first game, Woodland’s Conner Stermer had two hits and drove in a run to pace the Wildcats.

Lead-off hitter Jake Clowers had the other hit for the Wildcats.

The Wildcats also pushed an unearned run across the plate.

Zach Lambert turned in a solid performance for the Wildcats, pitching six innings, allowing four hits and striking out 10.

Ayden Ray pitched an inning, giving up two hits and striking out two.

In the 6-5 victory, Woodland trailed 5-1 heading into the seventh inning but pushed five runs across the plate to seize the momentum and clinch the victory.

Woodland outhit Cambridge 6-5.

Lucas Baker drove in three runs with a triple and also got the win from the mound pitching just ⅔ innings to close out the series.

In addition to Baker, Austin Daves struck out one and Ray two.

Clowers and Logan Bentley drove in a run each and the Wildcat scored on an unearned run.

Loganville rolled to its first-round victory with a pair of shutouts against Chapel Hill, winning 15-0 and 10-0 to set up the showdown with Woodland.

Cass vs. Kell: The Colonels fell to Kell 5-3 and 17-1 to end its season.

With the first-round loss, Cass ends the 2024 season with a 13-18 overall record.

Cass kept the first game close, out hitting the Longhorns 9-6, but coming up short on the scoreboard.

Trailing 5-2 heading into the seventh inning, the Colonels scored once in the inning, but the rally fell short when Kell pitched out of the inning.

Chase Tatum kept Cass in the game with two doubles.

Hunter Lovett and Connor Jenkins had an RBI each.

Lovett also pitched four innings, striking out two.

In the 17-1 loss, the Longhorns led 10-0 after three innings.

Jenkins drove in Taylor Hicks with Cass’ only run of the game in the fourth.

Kell takes on Villa Rica who needed three games in its first-round opener to beat Eastside.

Adairsville vs. Pike County: The Adairsville Tigers’ season came to an end with a 10-2 loss in one contest and a 5-4 loss in eight innings in the final game.

With the first-round Class 3A loss, Adairsville ends its season with a 15-11 overall record.

In the first game against Pike, Peyton Bowen and Hayden Blalock drove in runs for the Tigers.

Pike County opened the game with four runs in the first.

Adairsville was led by Jack Nelson and Ryan Farr with doubles.

In the nightcap that put an end to the Tigers’ season, Pike scored a run in the seventh to send the game into extra innings and then added the game-winner in the eighth.

Despite the loss, Nelson struck out six. He also drove in a run and had two hits.

Jarrett Scott also had two hits with an RBI.

Pike moves on to play at home against Hebron Christian in the best-of-three series next week in the Sweet 16.

Hebron easily swept Cedar Grove 16-1 and 19-1.
