Woodland girls place 5th, boys finish 9th 5A state meet

Woodland girls cross country finished fifth to pace the four local teams in the Class 5A state championship meet Saturday in Carrollton.

Although she didn’t produce her typical top-five placement, Wildcats senior Rylee Evans (20:39.74) still led her side, finishing 20th overall in the loaded 212-runner field.

Junior Emma Segars (28th overall) and sophomore Olivia Berry (35th) put together strong performances. Danielle Thayer, a junior, placed 60th. Freshman Miranda Pelow rounded out the team’s scorers with a 79th-place finish.

Overall, Woodland wound up with 218 points to place behind St. Pius X (36), Blessed Trinity (81), Midtown (112) and Decatur (118).

The Wildcats (322 points) came in ninth in the boys race, which which saw Decatur (46) outpace St. Pius (77) and Blessed Trinity (97) for the team title.

Tyler Jones managed the best individual finish among the Bartow County boys, as the Woodland junior placed 22nd — with a time of 17 minutes, 23.08 seconds.

Senior McKinley Chappell closed out his Wildcats career by finishing 49th overall out of 219 competitors. Junior Drew Thayer came in 70th; sophomore Kain Tanturri placed 95th; and sophomore Andy Forsyth wound up just outside the top 100 in 101st.

The Cartersville boys weren’t far behind Woodland, with 348 points and a 12th-place showing.

Sam Peters led the Canes, as he wrapped up his senior season in 45th position. Sophomore Malachi Vosburgh finished out a strong campaign in 52nd. Sophomore Cainen Crowder (72nd overall), senior Levi Booth (75th) and junior Paul Hyman (120th) completed the scoring for the Canes.

As for the Cartersville girls, McKinsey Spinks, once again, led the way. The senior wound up 54th in the event, as the Canes finished 18th in the team standings.

Fellow senior Trinity Atkins came in 89th. Junior Anna Grace Boone placed 107th. Samantha Herrera, a junior, finished 129th. Sophomore Meredith Gaines wasn’t far behind in 133rd position.
